The Wages Of Choosing The Measly Bowl

February 5, 2015

Friends,
Ezek. 33:12 says, “The righteousness of the righteous man will not save him when he disobeys.” Ezek. 18:26 says, “If a righteous man turns from his righteousness and commits sin, he will die for it.” In the same verse, God’s decree is repeated: “Because of the sin he has committed he will die.” Rom. 6:23 repeats this decree: “The wages of sin is death.” Yes, the rest of this Romans verse states the Good News: That in Christ we have the gift of eternal life. However, this eternal-life-walk does absolutely entail being dead to Self and Sin (verses 1-7) while walking the way of holiness as slaves to God. (v. 22)

This, then, is the case for those who are truly born anew: “Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires.” (Gal. 5:24) These saved, new creations (2 Cor. 5:17) do, therefore, continue to live crucified to the sinful nature (and crucified to the world –Gal. 6:14) by being controlled, with every step, by the Spirit. (Gal. 5:16,25 // Rom. 8:9) Only those who are led by (controlled by / follow / obey) the Spirit of God are children of God. (Rom. 8:14) Don’t be deceived: Those whose minds and actions submit to the sinful nature have made themselves hostile to God (v. 6-8) and they will consequently reap (spiritual / eternal) death. (v. 6,13)

Said a different way: Gratifying the cravings of the sinful nature (which happens through one’s own choice –Ja. 1:13-15), and following its desires and thoughts, reaps for everyone, including so-called “Christians” (just as it does for all who follow the way of disobedience), the wrath of God (Eph. 2:1-3) –which is spiritual death (Ja. 1:15) and “eternal punishment.” (Mt. 25:46) “Let no one deceive you… for… God’s wrath comes on all who are disobedient.” (Eph. 5:6) Indeed, no idolator has a share in Christ. (v. 5) Indeed, “Anyone who does not do what is right is not a child of God.” (1 John 3:10) In fact, “He who does what is sinful is of the devil.” (v. 8 ) Such a person is a child of the devil (v. 10), as are all those who refuse to comprehend the Truth. (John 8:42-47 // see also Gal. 1:6-9)

What is the reality, though, concerning those who truly obey / follow Christ? It is that we are done with human desires that are not of God (1 Peter 4:2) and live “instead for the will of God.” (same verse) This means that we walk in obedience to Christ’s commands, proving that we love Him (John 14:15 // 1 John 5:3) and are one with Him. (1 John 2:3,4 & 3:24) Our obedience proves that we have repented of sin, pledged our whole selves to Christ’s rule, and have, in actuality, given up everything to follow Him whole-heartedly and without ever looking back. (Luke 9:62 & 14:26-35 // Acts 26:20) Such people –only!– are inheritors of eternal life. (Mt. 7:21-23 // 2 Thes. 1:8,9 // Titus 1:16 // 1 John 5:18)

Do not be deceived: Neglecting to obey God in everything is to forfeit one’s inheritance (one’s gift of eternal life) for a measly bowl of sin. (Luke 9:23-25 // Heb. 10:26-31 & 12:14-17)

Sincerely,
with love,
Rachel
