The Lord Our God Is One

July 11, 2014

Jesus is God. (John 1:1,14) Jesus is the Son of God (1 John 5:12), the Son of Man (Mt. 25:31), the Almighty Judge (v. 31,32 // Rev. 20:11,12), the Creator and Sustainer of all things (Col. 1:16,17), and the Everlasting Father. (Isa. 9:6) To see Jesus is to see the Father. (John 14:8,9) No one has seen or can see God (1 Tim. 6:16) except in Jesus (Col. 1:15) who is the bodily form of God in all His fullness. (v. 19 & 2:9 // Heb. 1:3)

Jesus is the Rider on the white horse who, in justice, judges and makes war. (Rev. 19:11) “His name is the Word of God” (v. 13) and His name is “King of kings and Lord of lords.” (v. 16) This same title is used in 1 Tim. 6:15 while referring to God whom no one has seen or can see (v. 16) and who is “the blessed and only Ruler”. (v. 15) Yet of the Lamb, Rev. 17:14 states that “He is Lord of lords and King of kings”. We know that “the Lamb of God” (John 1:29) is Jesus, the only Savior. (same verse // Acts 4:12) We wait for His glorious return –He who is “our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ.” (Titus 2:13)

Jesus refers to Himself as that King who, upon His majestic return, judges and separates the righteous from the unrighteous. (Mt. 25:31-34 // see also 2 Thes. 1:7-10) He tells us in John 5:22, “The Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son.” In Isa. 43:11 Yahweh states that apart from Him there is no Savior and that there is, never was, and never will be, any God but Him. (v. 10c) Phil. 2:6-11 informs us that Jesus, “being in very nature God” (v. 6), made Himself human (v. 7), but that God exalted Him to be the Sovereign Ruler over all. (v. 9-11)

If we put all these verses together and let them interpret the Truth for us, we can see that Jesus, God the Father, and God the Holy Spirit as well, are all One God. For “God is Spirit” (John 4:24), “the Lord is the Spirit” (2 Cor. 3:17), Jesus is the Lord (Rom. 10:9 // Phil. 2:11), and therefore “the Lord our God, the Lord is One.” (Mark 12:29)

with love,
