We Must Be Close Friends With Christ
May 18, 2014
It is only through obeying Christ’s commands that we can be His friends (John 15:14), that we can walk in fellowship with Him (1 John 1:6 & 2:3,4), that He will dwell with us (3:24 // John 14:23), and that we can be saved. (Heb. 5:9) If we do not obey Christ’s commands we will not remain in His love. (John 15:10) We will be cut off (v. 2) and discarded (v. 6), and if there is no repentance along with a production of good fruit, then burned. (same verse // Luke 3:7-9 & 13:3) For God’s wrath will definitely come on all who are disobedient. (Eph. 5:6)
If it is imperative that we know Christ personally and that He knows us personally, then why are people not seeking to attain this relationship with Him? Why are so many who claim to be Christ-followers not actually following Him? They follow a churchy culture, they follow their friends, maybe even the pastor; they follow man-made traditions, rules, and expectations, they follow their heart, they follow the world, and they follow, maybe even diligently, what they think the Bible teaches. But all that they follow is a deception –which will not inherit for them eternal life– because they do not follow Jesus Himself. They therefore do not know Him, and He does not call them His friends.
Jesus informs us that those who are given eternal life are those who heed His voice –those whom He knows because they follow and obey Him. (John 8:51 & 10:27,28) He also informs us that those who do not heed His voice, those who do not follow and obey Him, even if they feign doing so by hanging around Him (Luke 13:22-28), will not be given entrance into Heaven. (same verses) Because of their sinful deeds, because they would not abide in the will of the Lord, because they would not obey Christ’s commands, they will be shut out from God’s presence forever. (v. 27 // Mt. 7:21-23 & 24:10-13 // 2 Thes. 1:8,9)
Let us, therefore, consistently seek that which keeps us in close friendship with Christ.
