Imaginations Choosing Abominations

March 6, 2014

The Lord says, “They… chose what displeases Me.” (Isa. 66:4) How so? By choosing to do “evil in My sight”. (Same verse) This evil they do by having “chosen their own ways.” (v. 3) “Their souls delight in their abominations” (same verse) as they invent disgusting activities (v. 3,17) from the recesses of “their imaginations” (v. 18), which, in turn, stem from the uncleanness of their hearts. (Mark 7:20-23)

But God pleads with them, “Turn from these wicked offenses, get a new heart and a new spirit, and live.” (See Ezek. 18:30-32) God is presenting these wicked people with a choice –the choice to remain in their abominations, or to turn from them and receive a new heart and a new spirit. If they would but do so, the Lord promises to cleanse them of their impurities and idols (36:25), give them a new heart, spirit, and mind (v. 26 // 1 Cor. 2:16 // Heb. 10:16) –by having His own Spirit come to live within them (Ezek. 36:27 // John 14:23)– and free them, move them, and enable them to follow God’s ways victoriously. (Ezek. 36:27 // Gal. 5:16 // 2 Peter 1:3,4)

Those who choose this new life and who continue walking on this “highway… called the Way of Holiness” (Isa. 35:8) do so through the obedience that comes from true faith (Rom. 1:5) and true love for Christ. (John 14:15 & 15:10) “The unclean will not journey on it” (Isa. 35:8) because the Road of Eternal Life is only “for those who walk in that Way” (same verse) –God’s Way / the way that pleases God. Because of rebelling against God, sinning against Him, and forsaking Him (1:28), and because they delight in idolatry (v. 29), these enemies of God (v. 24) “will be disgraced because of the abominations which they have chosen.” (See v. 29)

“Now choose life.” (Dt. 30:19) In other words, choose the Lord, “For the LORD is your life.” (v. 20) “See, the choice has been set before you: To walk in God’s ways or to refuse.” (See v. 15-18) Choosing the Lord is to choose His ways. To make this choice is to enter into covenant with the Lord (29:12) that He be one’s God. (v. 13) However, if anyone does this only to receive blessing and protection and still persists in going his own way (v. 19), God will bring down upon that person His incredible wrath. (v. 20)

Again: “I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose Life.” (Dt. 30:19) To choose God is to choose Life, and this Life is called “God’s Way” and “The Way of Holiness”. To choose one’s own way and follow one’s own heart and imaginations, is to choose Death.

It is a choice. Every person’s choice.

with love,
