Not Loving = Not Abiding In God

February 10, 2014

“Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.” (1 John 4:8) Therefore, because God is love, those who say they abide in God through Christ, yet who also harbor hatred in their hearts toward anyone, do not actually abide in Christ. They do not have fellowship with Him, nor do they belong to Him. They are not in union with Him. They do not possess Eternal Life. They are not saved.

Hatred is an act of the dark realm (Gal. 5:20) –that realm whose citizens reap Hell. (v. 19-21 // 1 John 3:15) Anyone who partakes of hatred, even though he may think or say that he abides with God, simply lies (1 John 1:5,6) and like Cain, belongs to the evil one. (3:12) God’s command is that we love Him whole-heartedly and love our fellowman as ourself. (4:21 // Mt. 22:37-40) “Anyone who does not love remains in death.” (1 John 3:14) We are told to come out of death into Life –into Christ, who Himself is the Eternal Life. (5:20)

The Message of the Truth has always been the same: “We should love one another.” (1 John 3:11) And this includes loving our enemies. (Luke 6:27) If we do so, then God lives in us (4:12) and we live in God. (v. 16)

How does love behave? It acts (3:18), and it acts in accordance with the Truth. (same verse) It also speaks the Truth, but always in love. (Eph. 4:15) This does not mean with gushiness or tolerance for wrong, but it means we speak the Truth by the Spirit of God (1 Peter 4:11) –by Him who is Love itself. (1 John 4:16)

When we are walking in Love, in God’s love, will we be rude, unkind, impatient, self-seeking, arrogant, unforgiving, envious, deceitful, hostile, or hateful? Absolutely not. (1 Cor. 13:4-7) So if anyone resorts to these, they are not abiding in Love, in Him who is Love. Though they be otherwise spiritually superior, their whole spirituality amounts to zero. (v. 1-3)

Having a spiritual life that amounts to zero is to be walking in death. For anyone who does not walk in love –love for God and other people– has no true knowledge of God or relationship with God.

with love,
