Change: Leave Enslavement To Sin

February 7, 2014

Friends,
People are used to their slavery to sin. And people (generally speaking) like to remain in what they are used to. Thus remaining a slave to sin is more appealing to them than stepping into a lifestyle that, although it promises them freedom (Gal. 5:1), is foreign to them. Change threatens and terrifies most people because change is hard, it takes effort, and the unknown seems more frightening than continuing in a familiar situation, even if that situation is bring them pain and disgrace. Despite the fact that they usually do know they are addicted, they nevertheless hold tightly to their alcohol, to their drugs, to their friends who delight in the same vile things they do, and to their false doctrine, perversion, and lazy, obstinate mindset. Such is the curse of the general, natural human psyche. (Rom. 8:7)

God sent Someone to free us from this enslaved way of thinking (Rom. 8:1-8) –from this mindset that leads to death. (v. 6) His name is Jesus. (7:24,25) Through Him we are given a new heart, spirit, and mind (Ezek. 36:25-29), as well as deliverance from unclean conduct. (v. 29) Furthermore, we are given a loathing for our past wickedness (v. 31) and a desire to carefully keep God’s laws. (v. 27) By being set free from sin (Rom. 6:18) we are freed up to offer ourselves continually to God as His slaves (v. 22). This slavery to Freedom is a slavery to the righteousness that leads to holiness (v. 19) and results in eternal life. (v. 22)

But, sadly, many people prefer to indulge themselves in their “slavery to uncleanness and to ever-increasing wickedness” (Rom. 6:19), thus keeping themselves on the road marked “Death”. (v. 16,21,23) And because they prefer this, they seek out teachers who will tell them, “Yes, you are free in Christ even while you remain enslaved to sin.” (2 Tim. 4:3 // 2 Peter 2:18,19 // Jude 1:4) This is unbelievable! –Especially in view of multitudes of statements from God’s Word that states to us the exact opposite!

Consequently, the majority of people remain deliberate slaves to sin. The teachers do, and so do their followers. Because they have refused to submit to the washing unto cleanliness, and, through effort done in the available power of the Spirit kept themselves clean, blackest darkness is reserved for them all. (Mt. 22:11-13 // 2 Peter 1:3,4 & 2:17-22 // Rev. 22:14,15)

But, not so with those who truly believe the Real Message of Freedom! For we are not of those who shrink back with fearful and rebellious hearts that lack faith (Heb. 10:39) and are accordingly destroyed (same verse), but we are of those who have obediently submitted ourselves to righteousness (Rom. 6:16) so that “our minds and consciences may remain cleansed from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!” (See Rom. 12:2 and Heb. 9:14)

Yes, stepping into the Cleansing and the Freedom –with total resolve– is a big change. But it is a change that is wonderful, indescribably better by far than enslavement to sin, and is absolutely necessary for inheriting everlasting Life. (Mt. 18:3 // Rom. 8:13,14)

Sincerely,
with love,
Rachel
