Understanding God’s Ways & Thoughts

November 21, 2013

Friends,
The Lord informs us in Isa. 55:8,9 that His thoughts and ways are not like ours, but as the heavens are higher than the earth, His thoughts and ways are higher than ours. How then should anyone expect to understand Him? How can anyone expect to “exult in understanding and knowing God” (see Jer. 9:24) being there is such a difference in thoughts and ways between His and man’s?

The connection lies with the Spirit. God has given us His Spirit to live right inside of our spirit. This Gift is given to those who put their trust in Jesus, His atoning sacrifice, His teachings, and His leadership.

“No one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.” (1 Cor. 2:11) But we have received the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has given to us (v. 12), and learn from Him spiritual truths. (v. 13) Therefore, because of Christ, and through the Spirit, we can discern and know the mind of God as we are instructed by Him. (v. 10,13,14,16) What an incredible privilege!

If people think they are not understanding the Lord’s ways and thoughts, they should ask themselves why not, for those with the Spirit have been promised understanding. Could it be that God’s Word is being neglected? The Spirit uses, primarily, the Word of God to speak from. As we feed our spirit with Christ’s words, the Spirit interprets it for us (John 14:26 & 16:13-15) and illuminates for us God’s thoughts and ways. Through this process, our minds are cleansed and transformed, and we are enabled to test, determine, and validate what God’s perfect will is concerning all matters. (Rom. 12:2 // 1 Cor. 2:15)

God wants to reveal His thoughts and ways to man and He has provided a way for this to happen. (Ps. 25:14 // Pr. 3:32 // Amos 3:7 & 4:13) It is through the gift of His Spirit within us who reveals to us, through the Scriptures, as well as through our prayers, praise, and circumstances, the ways and thoughts of God.

Sincerely,
with love,
Rachel
