We’ll Remain On The Walkway

October 11, 2013

People, including most of those who say they follow Christ, insist that sinning is a daily occurrence for them and everyone. Yet this belief contradicts many Scripture verses, such as 1 John 3:9: “No one who is born of God will continue to sin.” Then it says it a different way: “He [the born-again person] cannot go on sinning.” The reason given is that the person has been born of God and that God’s nature thus abides within him.

Since Jesus likens Himself to being the Way, the Door, and the Path, we could think of “being in Him” or “living in Him” as being on a sturdy steel walkway where underneath is a wilderness full of dangerous swamps, sinkholes, fire pits, land mines, evil creatures, etc. With such a case, who wouldn’t want to stay securely on the Walkway? Who would want to linger around gazing at the filth below and wishing he could take a quick detour? Only a fool! Only a person who does not truly believe in and love Christ.

Can a true Christian be blown off his feet –maybe even fall off the Walkway– so that he, for a time, is not living in Christ? Yes. This can happen due to weariness, neglect of God’s Word, a stormy trial, or an assault by the evil ones. But what will a true Christ-follower, a person who truly loves Jesus, do? He will quickly, due to the fear of the Lord and the fear of the destruction awaiting fallen ones, call out in repentance to the One who can forgive sins, save, and restore.

Will a fall off the Walkway be deliberate? No. A person born of God will avoid the evil wilderness with ever-increasing determination. He will love his Lord and Master and will cling to Him with intensifying adoration and obedience.

As 1 John 3:9 says, “No one who is born of God will continue to sin.”

with love,
