His Ruling Word Created Everything

September 1, 2013

Through God everything exists. (Heb. 2:10) As 11:3 states, “The universe was formed at God’s command.” Also, Gen. ch. 1 says repeatedly, “And God said…” God’s command is His Word, and we are told that His Word is Jesus. (John 1:1,14) Therefore, as Heb. 1:2 confirms, it was through the Son (Jesus / the Word of God / the bodily form of God –Col. 2:9) that God made the universe.

Ps. 33:9 also lets us know that God’s command, which is His word/Word, brought creation into existence: “For He spoke and it came to be; He commanded, and it stood firm.” The heavens and stars, as well, were formed this way (v. 6), and while determining how many there would be, the Lord named them all. (147:4) Indeed, God created everything, not “out of what was visible” (Heb. 11:3), but simply by His command. (same verse) –His command who is the Word of God, namely Jesus.

Why do people have trouble believing that the amazing, all-powerful God of the universe cannot just command something into existence? Why is it hard for them to believe that this Sovereign God would need something tangible and visible to work with? Where do they think those materials would have come from anyway? Did gases and dirt and particles always exist? Did those have no beginning? Regardless of what the worldly-wise try to teach, God is the only One who has always, from eternity, existed. All other things were His creation, and He needed nothing but Himself in order to create. He, the Triune God, used His Word (as well as His Spirit –Gen. 1:2,26), and that is what the Bible teaches.

What is this teaching about Adam and Eve not being individual people? Yes, “Adam” means “man” and “Eve” means “living”, but so are there meanings attached to most names. The meaning of their names does not signify at all that the Genesis account of them was referring to mankind, and the details are proof to the contrary. Moreover, there is no attestation that God made other humans around the same time so that the couple’s children could marry outside the family. Acts 17:26 reveals just the opposite: “From one man He made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth.”

Why are people disbelieving that Scripture is the Word of God? Why are they trying to discredit its authenticity and inerrancy? Is it really that difficult to believe that the God who created the sun, the mountains, the sea creatures, the human body –equipped with DNA and eyes that see color– and all else, would find it impossible to get a Book written that told of Himself, His ways, events of history, and which predicted things before they happened? 2 Tim. 3:15-17 and 2 Peter 1:19-21 tell us that it is imperative to our knowledge and salvation that we understand that the Scriptures were not written according to men’s own impulses or will, but by the Holy Spirit’s who spoke from God. Therefore to discredit God’s Word, even if only disbelieving in one’s own heart, is to jeopardize one’s eternal soul. Therefore, “those who take pride in their worldly wisdom” (see 1 Cor. 3:18-20) should instead fear God, research the facts of how God has preserved His Word, believe it, and adhere to its teachings.

God’s Word will always rule. For God’s Word is Himself. People would best pick it up then, study it, take it seriously, and obey what He commands.

with love,
