We Praise, He Slays

June 1, 2013

Ps. 107 is a wonderful psalm to use in any situation where we need the Lord’s intervention, where we need His help, encouragement, comfort, and deliverance, where we need righteousness, healing, or justice enacted, and where we need evil thwarted and idols slain. Singing joyful songs of thanksgiving to God (v. 22) and declaring that the Lord, whose love is unfailing (v. 8 ), saves us out of our distresses when we (humbly and repentantly) call to Him for help (v. 13), is our way to freedom and restoration. (v. 14,30) For “He breaks down gates of bronze and cuts through bars of iron” (v. 16), hushing the stormy waves (v. 29) and redeeming us from sin, gloom, punishment, evil, fear, chaos, and death. (v. 2,10-14,18,25-28)

Only the Lord is able to do what is impossible (Ps. 77:14 // Luke 1:37), and He does it for His people who cry out to Him for help and who praise Him for His attributes. (Ps. 107:31,32) As Ps. 108:12,13 say, “Give us aid [Lord,] against the enemy, for the help of man is worthless. With God we will gain the victory, and He will trample down our enemies.” –The evil realm that aids those who withhold mercy, truth, and justice. But God, who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life (John 14:6), and who is perfectly just, righteous, and merciful (Dt. 32:3,4,36-39), is also all-powerful. (same verses) Therefore, we always cast the battle to Him, doing so through praise and trust, and through our songs of exaltation to Him who judges with perfect knowledge and equity and who wants all people to come to repentance. (2 Peter 3:9)

So we exclaim, “Arise, LORD! Lift up Your hand, O God. Do not forget the helpless.” (Ps. 10:12) And we declare, “Continually we put our trust in Your Word, O God, crying out for Your help, and we know we will not be disappointed.” (From Ps. 22:5) “Our eyes are on You, O Lord, for only You can release our feet from the snare.” (From Ps. 25:15) “Thank you, God, for Ps. 140:12 which tells us, ‘I know that the LORD secures justice for the poor and upholds the cause of the needy.’ Therefore we have complete confidence that, ‘Surely the righteous will praise Your name and the upright will live before You.’ (v. 13) Yes, we know that the righteous and the faithful will live before You in rest and security (Jer. 30:10) as You Yourself ‘vigorously defend their cause.'” (Jer. 50:34)

“Lord, You truly are the only One who can free us from the oppression of those who malign us, who speak lies, and who spread corruption and injustice throughout the land. Therefore we trust in Your Word, Lord, for as You’ve said, ‘Today I am freeing you from the chains on your wrists.’ (Jer. 40:4) Grant this freedom, O God, to those we are lifting up to You through prayer and praise. Thank you, Lord. Now we do wait in expectation and trust, in continued prayer, praise, and thanksgiving; for we know Your Word promises that as we do this, You use it to pave the way for the deliverance.” (Ps. 50:14,15,23)

“Thank you, God. We praise Your holy, mighty Name. Amen and amen.”
