Walk In Agreement With God

May 12, 2010

Amos 3:3 says, “Can two walk together, except they be agreed?” In other words, “Can two abide, work, or fellowship together, unless they be in agreement?” The answer is: No, not easily. Not without strife or frustration. “God has called us to live in peace.” (1 Cor. 7:15) So for us to step into relationships that cause friction is something that displeases and dishonors God.

2 Cor. 6:14-16 commands us, “Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? What harmony is there between Christ and Baal? What does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said: ‘I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be My people.'”

1 Cor. 6:19 tells us that our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. In verse 15, Paul asks if we can unite our body to a prostitute, but immediately answers, “Never!” And on to verse 20, he explains that if we do so, we have dishonored God and committed spiritual adultery against Him.

Someone who claims to have united himself with the Lord (v. 17) may also claim he has not sinned against the Lord in this way. In fact, multitudes are claiming this. However, it is not true. These “Christians” are liars saying, “I know Him” (1 John 2:4), yet by refusing to do what He commands, they are merely an example of 1:6: “If we claim to have fellowship with Him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the Truth.” It’s either or. Either we walk in The Darkness or we walk in The Truth.

God only lives in the kingdom of Truth and Light. So if we are really in fellowship with Him, we will be there. For He will not step over into The Darkness. This is why to obey 2 Cor. 6:17 is a necessity. For if we do not separate from the darkness, we cannot walk with God. And to not walk with God… well, it’s a path that does not lead to Heaven!

“Therefore come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you.” (2 Cor. 6:17)

In the same way that two people cannot walk, abide, work, or fellowship with each other unless they are in agreement –unless they have the same goal, the same values, the same attitude, the same Spirit… neither can the Lord God do so with a person. That person must be in alignment with His Spirit… must be in agreement with His thoughts, His attitude, His ways, His values, His heart, His instructions… Or the two will not be able to walk together / live together / abide together. God will not be walking with the person who is not in full agreement with Him.

1 Cor. 6:17 says, “But he who unites himself with the Lord is one with Him in spirit.” If we are not one with Him in spirit, then we are not united to Him. It’s that simple. For “You are not your own; you were bought at a price.” (v. 19,20) So if we take what is God’s and throw it back to the Kingdom of Darkness, by indulging ourselves in our own lusts for idols, lies, pleasure, and sin, then we’ve done the same thing as uniting ourselves to a prostitute –that world system that is at enmity with God– and He will certainly see us as unfaithful spiritual adulterers against Him.

Will He then have anything good to say to us come Judgment Day? (Matt. 7:21-23 & 2 Cor. 5:10 & Rev. 20:12) He will not.

“Therefore come out from them and be separate…”

with love,
